The Gozo Heritage
Gozo Heritage provides a dramatic experience of key phases in seven thousand years of life on Gozo, modelled, imaginatively reconstructed, and brought to life through light and sound. In an eventful twenty minutes of controlled experience it prepares the partipant for a deeper understanding and enjoyment of this fascinating island.
Gozo Heritage was conceived by Brian Mizzi, who wished to see a dynamic museum experience established in a stately mansion inland from Mgarr Harbour, to complement existing facilities on the island. The concept was researched, developed and realised by Derek Nice (Creative Director) and a team of specialist and generalist workers and consultants. Gozitans have played an important part at all stages of the project, as well as providing the majority of the work force. From its first conception the project took nine months to complete – something of a record in this genre.
The Heritage consists of a journey through a sequence of areas, each of which presents an aspect of Gozitan history. These are presented by means of imaginative reconstructions eg: the gigantic neolithic goddess figure, the interior of a corsair galley; by sculptured figures – eg: Ulysses and Calypso, galley slaves and overseer, Gozititan peasants and sailors’ by reproductions of artefacts, from Roman statues to pottery; and by graphic devices and atmospheric design. The beautiful characteristic, architecture of the building, with its arches and honey-coloured stone, is always a containing spirit. Almost all the objects encountered can be touched, and indeed this is encouraged.

The visitors are pulsed through the sequence of areas by means of light and sound and it is possible to hear the soundtrack in nine languages. The journey ends in a short tape slide projection, which celebrates the beauty and interest of the island, its people and activities.
Outside the controlled experience, in an open courtyard and in a roofed courtyard which reconstructs a Gozitan harbour scene, participants about to enter the sequence, or having completed it, are provided with refreshment bars and toilets, and with stalls selling local artefacts, gold and silver filigree and printed matter – from post-cards to books. These areas also exhibit substantial works of local ethnic craftsmanship.
Gozo Heritage is open Monday to Saturday from 08.30 to 16.45 hrs throughout the year and is designed to cater efficiently for large numbers. Contact telephone numbers are: 21561280/1.
